Section 17 Terminologies


Population: The set of all individuals about whom/which the question is asked.

Sample: The set of specific individuals tested in the experiment.

Subject: One individual in the sample.

Response Variable: The variable that is measured on each subject. Also called outcomes, dependent, target variable.

Predictor: Variable: A variable defining different conditions or groups for comparison. Also called inputs, regressors, covariate, independent, feature variable.

Group/Factor/Treatment: An independent variable assigned to subjects. Sets of subjects are given the same level of treatment.

Levels: The specific conditions or groups being compared.

Experimental Design: The set of conditions or groups included in an experiment.

Cell: One particular combination of level(s).

Replications: Number of data values obtained in each cell.
